A mere 1.5°C spike above baseline triggers mass expulsion of zooxanthellae — the photosynthetic partners corals depend on for 90% of their energy. What remains is a skeleton waiting to dissolve.

The family Pocilloporidae — dominant builders across the Indo-Pacific — has collapsed in 9 of 15 surveyed archipelagos. Montipora capitata is declining at similar rates.

03 · The Fieldwork

Three depth zones, one living mission.

0–4m · Shallows

Propagation

Floating rope nurseries suspend coral clips in optimal light. Each line carries 80 fragments; a station maintains 45 lines year-round.

4–15m · Mid-reef

Transplanting

Grown colonies are cemented onto prepped substrate in groups of 5–9. Montipora capitata fuses into continuous cover within 10 weeks.

15–35m · Deep slope

Assessment

Biannual sonar mapping tracks structural complexity across 1,800 tagged sites. Water eDNA reveals biodiversity recovery patterns.
