Craft, clarity, and a little wonder

There is a particular feeling at the heart of building software — part craft, part clarity, part wonder. It is the reason engineers fall for the work in the first place. It is also, unfortunately, sealed behind a wall of syntax.

In late 2019, Nadia, Rem, Joaquín and I went looking at earlier attempts to take that wall down and open software-making to everyone. Plenty were clever. None of them moved us. We wanted something that would hold the same feeling for anyone who tried it.

We started building Kestrel in 2020. For reach, we picked the most widely used programming surface ever made: the spreadsheet. For craft, we added a design layer that turns those rows into interfaces people actually want to open. For wonder, we kept the parts that still surprise us.

Then the ground shifted, and Kestrel found its people. Tens of thousands of them, in every timezone, with no coding background, building tools for their businesses, their neighbourhoods, their families, and occasionally for the sheer fun of it.

Last year the work got serious. From a two-van plumbing outfit tracking stock, to a distribution group coordinating eleven depots, to a national golf association running an international tournament — we watched Kestrel slot in beside the spreadsheets teams already trusted and hand people in operations, HR and sales a set of powers they had never been offered.

Today we are levelling up: Tablebase and Columnar support, richer layouts and components for Kestrel Pages, a template library you can actually browse, and new team plans built to unlock what an organisation already knows. And Northlight Partners as our partner in it.

Our mission is to put the craft, the clarity and the wonder of software-making into the hands of a billion new makers. We cannot wait to see what you build.

NORTHLIGHT

We’re proudly partnering with Northlight

Northlight Partners led early rounds in Corvus, Palladin, Marketside, Runwell and a long list of companies that outlived their categories. Ivy Marchetti joins our board.

What’s new today?

Today we’re shipping Tablebase and Columnar support, new layouts and components for Kestrel Pages, a template library that is finally browsable, and team plans built to unlock what any organisation already knows.

Tablebase and Columnar users can now build with Kestrel

We started with Gridline. Kestrel now reads Tablebase and Columnar too — or use Kestrel Tables, our own store, when you need more room and more speed.

Pages

Kestrel Pages gains multi-column layouts and new components

Multi-column layouts, a proper board view, and charts landing shortly — plus the data grid that runs Kestrel itself, now available as a component inside your own Pages.

DiscoverUse cases

The template library is finally worth browsing

A rebuilt library with 380 templates, sorted by the work you actually do, so the next project starts from something close instead of an empty screen.

New team plans unlock what your organisation knows

Pro and Business now include unlimited Apps and Pages. A new Starter plan opens at $22 a month, and your first builds stay free, as they always have.

What’s coming soon?

We are not sitting still. This year goes into making Kestrel simpler to pick up, opening far more design control, adding components worth waiting for, and reading from many more data sources. Sharing a template you built should be trivial too.

Keep it simple

A gentler first hour, clearer onboarding, and a round of refinement across the data editor and the layout builder.

More design control

New themes, a much wider colour range, sharper versions of the components you use daily, and a few you have been asking for.

More data sources

Data is what an app is about, and it lives everywhere. Expect many more sources beyond Gridline, Columnar and Tablebase.

Companies are levelling up with Kestrel.

Operations of every size are moving off spreadsheets and paper runs and onto connected apps their teams open every morning.

“Every time we hit a knot of formulas nobody wants to touch, the whole room now says the same thing: can’t we just build this in Kestrel?
