Kindling is where independent teachers, guilds and institutions run their own membership under their own name.
More than 7 million people show up each month inside communities built on Kindling — cohort schools, research collectives, trade associations, and studios that outgrew a group chat.
We are fully remote: 148 people working from 31 countries, and no head office anywhere.
Kindling was started by Marta Oyelowo, Devin Hollis, and Priyanka Raval in the spring of 2021.
The three of them had spent the previous four years building course software, watching every good cohort turn into a group chat that nobody could find anything in. They left to fix the part after the course.
We raised $34m from operators rather than institutions — founders and product leaders from a dozen companies whose own communities were the reason we started.

Teaching one person well changes what they build for everyone else.
The next decade of teachers will not work for an institution.
The durable way to earn a living from what you know is a community, not an audience.
We look for people who are unusually good at one thing, give them the room to do the best work of their career, and stay out of the way.
Nobody counts hours here. We are exacting about outcomes instead, and we say so early rather than at review time.
We work across ten time zones, default to writing, and document more than most people think is reasonable.
Twice a year the whole company meets somewhere worth flying to. So far: Portugal, Georgia, Morocco, Vietnam, Chile, and Slovenia.

“Four years in and I still have not run out of hard problems.”
Idris Karimov — Head of data and revenue operations
Five sentences we actually use in decisions, not five we printed on a wall.
We are here for the next decade of this company, not the next board meeting. Every quarter we stop and re-read the trade-offs we made, and we take the ones that still hold up in ten years over the ones that flatter this month.
We hire people we would not want to manage, tell them what has to be true, and let them decide how. No hour tracking, no status theatre — but expectations are stated plainly, in writing, before the work starts.
When a decision is reversible we make it in an afternoon and learn from what happens. We would rather have a real result to disagree about than a perfect plan nobody has tested.
We would rather spend a week on the thing customers touch than a month on the deck about it. Criticism of our own work is welcome from anyone, on any day, in public.
Feedback here is specific, early, and given to your face. We assume good intent, name our own mistakes first, and treat a colleague getting better as a result worth as much as a shipped feature.
Teammates in 31 countries who meet in person twice a year. A surprising number of them end up on holiday together.
