Background
This all started with The Sundial Summit ’25, our annual online conference. Instead of shipping physical gifts to everyone who registered, the way we had in past years, we wanted to leave something behind that keeps working — so we planted one tree in the name of every attendee.
The thing is, we quickly realised the effect could reach much further than one summit. That’s why we’re working with our community to restore 5 whole woodland sites across the Rift Valley and coastal Mozambique.
Together we’ll draw down carbon, make the case for lower-waste conference swag, and put real income in the hands of the people doing the planting.
Environmental impact
The average tree in Terraleaf’s current planting mix locks away about 92 kgCO₂ across a 40-year lifetime.
Restored woodland gives each region’s mammals, birds, insects, fish and understory plants somewhere to live again.
We’re working with growers in every region to lift crop yields alongside the wider village economy.
About the sites
Collaboration
We chose Terraleaf to run the planting programme, so we know the trees are in careful hands. Working through their vetted reforestation partners, Terraleaf helps more than 11,800 companies put millions of trees in the ground each month, at sites on five continents.
Every tree is planted by people who live beside the site and have a stake in how it turns out. In return, the programme strengthens village economies and widens access to schooling and clinics, as well as protecting the biodiversity nearby.
Rather than mailing out swag, we planted a tree for every single registration to our annual conference. From cutting travel to trimming the shipping footprint, the whole event was built around breathing easier.
We know this is only the start of what it takes to bring our footprint down. We’ll keep thinking hard alongside you — whether that’s energy saved or materials chosen better, we can build a future where everyone breathes a little easier.
