Made by people who ask too many questions

We exist so that product teams can talk to the right people this week instead of next quarter. We do not simply believe that speed changes what a team learns — we have watched it happen, over and over, in our own research calls. Fieldnote would not exist if we had not gone and asked.

3 co-founders, 2 companies, 1 Fieldnote

We are a distributed team trying to change how often companies actually speak to the people they build for. We know the alternative well: our first company shipped quietly for eighteen months and met its audience about four days too late. Read the origin story.

It gets better from there — we raised a €19.4M Series B to help more teams put research back at the front of the work rather than the end of it.

Fieldnoters are alright

Quietly confident. Independent, but never precious about it. There is no single Fieldnote type, and after eight years of hiring we think that is most of the point.

"The people here are thoughtful in a way that is genuinely rare. Every review makes the work better, and nobody is doing it to look clever."

"No commute means I get an hour back at the start of every day, and I spend it with my daughter before anyone opens a laptop."

"Fieldnote is a group of curious people working on genuinely hard problems and having a slightly suspicious amount of fun doing it."

Team spotlight: engineering

Our CTO Rafael Duarte on how the engineering team built a way to keep business logic out of the corners of the codebase — and why it took three attempts to get right.

How do you begin to describe a company culture in a few words?

We are fully remote and always* have been. We care, we work hard, we are relentlessly customer-obsessed in a way we hope is not annoying, and we are curious to the point of being a little odd. Fine — quite odd.

Remote asks for autonomy, self-starting, trust running in both directions, and communication you have to be deliberate about. So those are the things we practise. We would rather you stayed yourself than absorbed a company personality.

*Technically there were eleven months in 2017 when four of us shared a borrowed room above a bike shop in Lisbon. Fully remote since 2018.

Home office budget

Alongside the laptop (and some genuinely good merch) you get €400 for the desk, chair and lamp situation, because comfort compounds over four years.

Pension contribution

We add €180 a month to your pension regardless of what you put in, so the boring compounding happens whether or not you ever think about it.

Equity, properly explained

One year cliff, four year vest. You get in on the sensible floor of a company that is growing without setting anyone's money on fire.

Health cover, fully paid

Medical, dental and optical covered at one hundred per cent, plus free membership with two telehealth services we use ourselves.

Time away that you take

Unlimited leave is a lovely idea that quietly discourages leave. Instead you accrue days, you carry them over, and you are paid for whatever you leave behind.

Fully, properly remote

We chose this before the world made everyone try it. If it suits you, you already know. If you are undecided, read our remote working notes.

Flexible hours

Work where you like, in whatever room works for you. Work when you like, as long as some of it overlaps with your team. We mix synchronous and asynchronous on purpose.
