About this kit

A hand-finished birch and brass planetarium that turns on a single crank. Four planet arms run off a stacked gear train you assemble yourself, so the ratios stay visible once the model is on a shelf. Every panel is pre-cut and pre-sanded; the only tool in the box is a small hex driver.

The gear train actually works

I expected the arms to bind after a week on the shelf and they have not. Took me two evenings at the kitchen table, mostly because I kept stopping to watch it turn.

Bring a lamp for step 14

The brass detents are tiny and the printed guide is grey on cream, which did not help. Everything else was cut cleanly and the finished piece looks far pricier than it was.
