The storm that outran its forecast

Coastal researchers tell ASHWEIR that Ivor's overnight jump to category five was "a rehearsal for the decade in front of us."

Every reconnaissance flight that went into Ivor came back with the same reading: the water underneath it was running four degrees warmer than the March average, and it stayed warm all the way down to a hundred metres. That is the part that matters. A storm can churn cold water up from below and starve itself. Ivor had nothing cold to reach.

"We keep calling these events unprecedented. At some point the word stops being useful and starts being an excuse," said Dr. Owain Marchetti, who has flown into eleven Gulf systems since 2014.

Rapid intensification — a jump of 35 mph or more in twenty-four hours — used to be the rare, headline-grabbing case. In the last eleven seasons it has shown up in roughly a third of named storms that reached hurricane strength on this coast, and the jumps themselves are getting larger. Ivor gained 55 mph between two evening advisories, which left emergency managers in three counties writing evacuation orders for a storm two categories stronger than the one they had planned for that morning.

The forecast track was never really wrong. The intensity was. And intensity is what decides whether a surge barrier holds, whether a hospital keeps its generators dry, and whether the people who chose to stay are making a survivable bet.
