…Moonhusk

Where can I buy Moonhusk?

Moonhusk turns up in most grocery aisles across eleven countries, in the sort of café that takes its steam wand seriously, and in any kitchen that would rather cook with oats than with a cow. If your usual shop doesn’t stock us yet, ask them to — shop managers are more persuadable than people assume. Or open the Husk Radar and we’ll point you at the nearest counter pouring it.

I don’t like Moonhusk and I can’t explain why.

That’s allowed. Taste is stubborn and oats are an acquired thing. Write to us anyway — unexplainable complaints are our favourite kind of post, and roughly a third of them change something on the recipe board.

I need to reach a human at Moonhusk, ideally now.

Six people answer this inbox from a room above the mill in Tredegar. Median reply time last quarter was 4 hours 12 minutes, which we are quietly proud of and will stop mentioning eventually.

What actually is oat drink?

Whole oats, water, enzymes, patience. The enzymes break the oat starch into smaller sugars, which is why it tastes faintly sweet without anybody adding sugar. Then it’s strained, fortified and sent off in a carton. No cow involved at any stage.

Does oat drink go off?

Everything goes off eventually — look at any sitcom from 2004. An opened carton will turn if it sits out too long, and the date printed on the top is a best-before, not a cliff edge. If you want the honest version of how long you’ve actually got, and how to tell by nose alone, read this rundown.

How do I cook with Moonhusk?

Like milk, with one caveat: it thickens faster over high heat. Drop the hob a notch for béchamel and custards and it behaves perfectly.

Why use Husk Cream instead of cream from a cow?

It whips, it holds, it doesn’t split in an acidic pan sauce, and it carries roughly 63% less climate impact per litre than the dairy equivalent. Also it keeps three weeks longer once opened.

Why do you fortify the drinks?

Oats don’t naturally carry calcium, riboflavin, or vitamins D and B12 in useful amounts. If people are pouring this on cereal every morning instead of milk, it should pull the same nutritional weight.

What are the cartons made of? Recyclable? Compostable?

Paperboard from certified regrowth forest, a thin polymer liner, and an aluminium layer on the ambient range. Recyclable wherever beverage cartons are collected — currently 71% of the councils we ship into. Not compostable, and we’d rather say so than fudge it.

How do you work out the CO2e figure on each carton?

Field to shelf: growing, milling, processing, packaging, transport and the average trip home. An outside assessor re-runs the model every 18 months and we print whatever number it returns, including the year it went up.

Are all your drinks plant-based?

Every one of them. Nothing in the range has ever contained an animal ingredient, and the lines are cleaned between runs so nothing wanders in.

What’s the difference between the varieties? (whole, light, original, barista)

Fat, mostly. Whole is the richest at 3.4g per 100ml, light sits at 0.6g, original splits the difference, and barista carries extra fat plus a touch more calcium so the foam stands up under a wand.

Why rapeseed oil?

Because it tastes of almost nothing, which lets the oat come forward instead of fighting it. It’s also unusually high in unsaturated fat, and swapping saturated fat for unsaturated fat is one of the few dietary moves with decades of agreement behind it. Read more.

Where does the sugar in your oat drink come from?

From the oat itself. Enzymes break long starch chains into shorter sugars during production — the same thing your saliva does to a cracker, only in a tank. Nothing sweet is added to the original recipe.

What about allergens — gluten, soy, nuts?

No soy, no nuts, no dairy anywhere in the range. Oats are naturally gluten-free but travel with wheat, so we mill on a dedicated line and test every batch to under 10 ppm.

Is Moonhusk bad for you?

Not in any sense we can find, and we did look. It’s a fortified oat drink, not a health cure — it does the job of milk in a bowl of porridge and asks less of the land to do it.
