Field notes on scale

For exponentiation there is a small family of familiar rules that let us simplify an expression; for instance we know that xᵃ · xᵇ = xᵃ⁺ᵇ. A very similar, if often forgotten, set exists for logarithms — in particular log_a(b) can be rewritten as log(b)/log(a).

d ≈ log(N/C) / log(s)

Further, we can split the division by C, because log(a/b) = log(a) − log(b). We remarked earlier that a coarse grid introduces measurement error; because of that we want the count of cells to be as high as we can afford.

d ≈ log(N)/log(s) − log(C)/log(s)

In practical terms we want s to tend toward infinity, which is rarely available on a Tuesday.

Informal and common-sense dimensionality

Basic notion: a dimension can be read as an independent axis along which a point may move: in 1D along a line, in 2D across a plane (x and y), in 3D inside a volume (x, y, z), and onward. ◇ 4
Traditionally we assign dimension by the least number of spatial axes needed to contain an object — a line is 1D, a square 2D, a cube 3D. ◇ 4
Shortcomings: this common-sense model fails for a number of ordinary objects.
A bent or curved line still feels 1D, even when it sits inside a higher-dimensional space. ◇ 6
