Suri Tangalle
Held inside an old coconut grove above the break at Rekawa Point, Suri Tangalle is a nine-room house made for long, unhurried weeks.
ReserveDrawn from the walauwa courtyard houses of the southern coast, nine low pavilions settle into the treeline in lime plaster, reclaimed jak timber and hand-thrown tile. Rooms open on two sides so the monsoon air moves straight through, and the ground floor is left as raked sand that runs out to the dune. It is a house built for the pace of the tide — somewhere to slow down, sleep deeply, and notice the light change.

Built only from materials found within a day's drive — lime, coconut timber, clay tile fired in Kirinda — the result reads as quietly modern and unmistakably of this coast. The pavilions sit so low against the dune line that from the water you would struggle to pick them out at all.
We built Suri with architects Nirmali Weeratunga and Dhanuka Perera, together with ceramicist Ishara Fonseka, who share a conviction that a building should take as little from a place as it gives back to it.
