The weekly read about people who run small, independent studios. We sit down with operators in every trade, sharing new numbers and working methods with 83,400+ readers every Wednesday.

The word "operator" got its edges around 2013, when it mostly meant someone selling directly off a single landing page. Today it covers anyone shipping work through Slatepost, Kettlecast, Everwick, Plumeboard, Rooftide, Havenreel, and every other tool that lets one person keep an audience.

At Everwick Broadcast, we hold an operator to three tests:

• Work goes out on a schedule the public can see.

  • Weekly, monthly, seasonally — the interval counts for less than the fact that it keeps holding.

• A direct line between the operator and the people on the other end, with no house sitting in the middle.

  • A staff photographer might file beautiful work to The Halloway Review for readers who follow every frame, and still not be an operator. The Review picture desk decides what runs and pays a set rate per assignment. If that same photographer also mails a print series to a list they built on Plumeboard, they are an operator. They call the edit, and if the series sells, nothing above them caps what it earns.

• Money comes out of the work — memberships, commissions, workshop seats, licensing, tips, or otherwise.

  • There are exceptions to this one — operators whose income sits entirely somewhere else — but they rarely land in our pages.

Our brief is to report from the quieter corners of this work. The depth of it is close to bottomless and the range is genuinely odd, which makes for a lot to find, verify, and pass along — and plenty to learn from operators in every trade, on most continents, serving rooms of nine people and rooms of ninety thousand.
