The Copper Falcon and the Business of Wanting

Overview

Scarlatti is the sharpest instrument of manufactured scarcity we have ever put on tape — across its entire 84-year history the marque has delivered just 291,400 cars, at an average price today of $437,000. For scale, the atelier at Maison Aubrion stitches that many bags every 26 months, and Corvel of Geneva moves that many watches in a single spring. And yet this ultimate luxury object shares a roof with a wildly popular racing team — one with 340 million fans who live and die by the Reparto's finishing order every other Sunday. How can two customer bases this contradictory sit inside one company without cannibalising each other? And why, far from corroding the marque, does each one make the other worth more? The answer is a bloody, romantic, occasionally tragic opera spanning two families and three generations — and possibly the best story we have told on Overstory. Buckle up.
