What Is Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is light made by a living thing. A chemical reaction inside the organism releases its energy as light rather than heat — a cold glow, essentially free of warmth.

How Does It Happen?

Most glowing species carry a molecule called luciferin plus an enzyme that oxidises it. When the two meet in the presence of oxygen, the reaction sheds a photon. Some animals brew the chemistry themselves; others borrow it from bacteria they keep as lodgers.

  • Cold light: almost all of the released energy leaves as light, so the glow never burns.
  • Blue-green bias: those wavelengths carry furthest through seawater, which is where most glowing species live.
  • On demand: many animals can switch the reaction on and off again in well under a second.
