Field Guide: 7-Day Coastal Route Through Norway
Overview
Seven days along the western fjords, moving north to south and finishing in Oslo. Rail and ferry throughout — no rental car. Written for late May, when the ridge paths are clear but the high passes are not.
Route Highlights
- Two nights in Bergen, one of them at the harbour
- The Voss line, booked on the left-hand side for the water
- A slow ferry through Nærøyfjord instead of the tourist boat
- One full rest day in Aurland before the ridge walk
Booking Order
- Rail seats open 90 days out and the Voss line sells through
- Guesthouses second — most hold rooms until a week before
- Ferries last; walk-on fares are the same price on the day
Costs below assume two people sharing, guesthouses rather than hotels, and dinner out four nights of seven. Everything is in kroner; card works everywhere, including the smallest ferry kiosks.
Theme: Arrival & the Old Wharf
- Land at Bergen Flesland, 38 minutes by airport bus
- Drop bags at the guesthouse in Nordnes before 15:00
- Evening: walk the wharf, then the fish market stalls
- Dinner: skrei stew at a harbour kitchen (no bookings)
Local notes: Buy the 7-day transit pass at the airport counter — it covers
