Your questions,
answered

What is a project?
A project in Aster is the top-level container for your database environment. Each project includes your primary database, its branches, and compute resources. You can think of it like a GitHub repo — one project, many branches. Learn more about Aster's object hierarchy.
What is a CU?
A CU (Compute Unit) is Aster's unit of compute capacity, pairing vCPU and RAM. Autoscaling adds and removes CUs based on your live workload so you never over-provision.
How is compute usage measured in Aster?
Compute is billed per CU-hour — the number of active compute units multiplied by the time they run. Idle databases scale to zero, so you are not charged while nothing is querying.
How is storage usage billed in Aster?
Storage is billed per GB-month on the volume of unique data your project stores, with branches sharing a copy-on-write base to keep costs low.
What happens with branches and storage?
New branches are instant and only store the data that diverges from their parent, so spinning up dozens of preview branches adds negligible storage.
How are Instant Restores billed?
Instant Restore (PITR) is billed per GB-month based on the volume of data changes retained across your selected restore window.
How does billing for additional branches work?
Branches beyond your plan's included count are billed per branch-hour while they are active, and stop accruing charges the moment they are deleted.
Why is the monthly minimum the same in the Launch plan vs. the Scale plan?
Both plans are fully usage-based with no monthly minimum. Scale simply unlocks larger limits, higher SLAs, and enterprise-grade features on top of the same metered pricing.
How can I control my costs?
Set per-project spend caps, tune autoscaling limits, and enable scale-to-zero so idle environments cost nothing. Budget alerts notify you before you cross a threshold.
Do you offer credits for startups?
Yes — eligible early-stage startups can apply for Aster credits through our Startups program. Reach out and our team will get you set up.
