Designing with Depth: Blur & Translucency Done Right

February 12, 2026 · 6 minutes

Translucency is one of the quietest tools in an interface designer's kit — and one of the easiest to overdo. A well-judged material does something remarkable: it lets the layer beneath stay present, softly out of focus, while the surface in front takes command. The user never loses their sense of place, because the background is still there, glowing through the glass.

Getting that effect right is less about a single blur value and more about a recipe: how much the backdrop is diffused, how strongly the surface is tinted, and whether foreground color is allowed to pick up vibrancy from what sits behind it. In this guide we'll build that recipe from scratch — when to reach for a thick material versus a thin one, how to keep type legible over any photograph, and where translucency should simply give way to a solid surface.
