Big storiesfor open country

We make films, identities, and field campaigns for organizations whose work deserves more than a passing glance.

Real life is the brief

The most convincing stories start with weather, people, consequence, and the patience to notice what actually happened.

You need to make it matter

Listen first

Find the human scale

We begin close to the people doing the work, not with the language a sector expects.

Build with evidence

Show what changed

Research, field production, and editorial judgment turn complexity into a story people can repeat.

Move beyond launch

Make a useful life

Systems, films, and campaigns are designed to keep working after the first burst of attention.

Fieldwork

A selection of moving-image, campaign, and identity systems built with partners in conservation, science, sport, and public life.

The origin story

2014

Two producers and a borrowed camera begin documenting land stewards across the interior.

2018

The studio adds strategy and identity, helping field stories travel through entire organizations.

2027

Cairn & Slate remains independent, field-led, and deliberately small.

We met on a rain-soaked ridgeline while each trying to explain a complex environmental project in three honest minutes. The conditions were terrible; the conversation was useful.

That first collaboration grew into a studio built around careful access and durable relationships. We work with scientists, athletes, community organizers, and operators whose expertise is easy to flatten from a distance.

Our job is to stay long enough to understand the stakes, then make the clearest version without sanding off the texture.
