About the editor
Iris is a design researcher and lifelong dismantler of office equipment. Her archive began with one discarded terminal and now includes working boards, manuals, oral histories and a drawer that is mostly space bars.
Keyshift is her first book and the result of four years spent listening to people explain why their favourite keyboard is obviously the correct one.
A story from page 284
In a university basement in 1987, a burst pipe collapsed part of a plaster ceiling onto a row of terminals. The screens were ruined. One keyboard was wiped dry, reconnected, and stayed in service for another eleven years.
Its owner kept the dent above the number row as proof that good tools can remember accidents.
