A seven-part correspondence course for designers tired of polite defaults.
Counterform School presents

Design pastthe default

Make work with a point of view. This self-paced field course helps digital designers replace fashionable sameness with clearer judgment, sharper language, and braver form.

What is this course? Why now?

The web has never had more tools—and too much of it feels the same. Counterform is a practical course in recognizing convention, testing it, and making deliberate alternatives.

A seven-part written course arrives one lesson at a time. Each dispatch mixes close reading, small exercises, awkward questions, and concrete examples from interfaces that refuse the expected answer.

You’ll inspect the habits hiding beneath templates, dashboards, portfolios, and launch pages. Then you’ll rebuild your instincts around audience, tone, hierarchy, and meaning.

This is not a recipe book or a collection of surface tricks. It is training for the moment when a familiar solution is technically correct but emotionally vacant.

Set aside one focused hour for each lesson. A notebook helps. Curiosity is mandatory; fashionable taste is not.

So the brief is peculiar and a client wants something safe?

Good. That tension is where interesting decisions begin.

You will

  • Notice the conventions shaping your first idea.
  • Write clearer reasons for visual decisions.
  • Build references beyond the current trend cycle.
  • Use constraint as a source of character.
  • Develop a sharper editorial eye.

You will not

  • Receive a magic style formula.
  • Collect a folder of fashionable effects.
  • Be told that every rule must be broken.
  • Replace strategy with personal taste.
  • Leave with twelve identical templates.

We won’t make another perfectly polished nothing. We’ll make the reason visible.

The standard is not novelty

Difference by itself is merely noise. The goal is correspondence: form that speaks in the same voice as the idea, the audience, and the moment. Sometimes that means restraint. Sometimes it means a fluorescent hand reaching through the border.

We will look at why familiar patterns persist, when they protect a reader, and when they become camouflage for indecision. You’ll leave with questions that travel between tools, industries, and styles.

Horn tooting

“I stopped asking what looked professional and started asking what the page needed to say.”Ronan Pierce · product designer
“The exercises are short, strange, and incredibly sticky. Our critique vocabulary changed in a week.”Sana Adeyemi · studio founder
“A welcome antidote to designing by screenshot. It made our team brave enough to edit.”Mateo Quinn · creative lead
“Counterform respects usability while refusing to confuse it with sameness. That distinction was worth the course.”Leila Chen · independent designer

Built from years of asking why

I’m Ivo Mercer, a designer, teacher, and recovering collector of screenshots. I have led design teams through identity systems, product launches, and the uncomfortable middle where no reference quite fits.

This course gathers the methods I return to when the work needs more than polish: name the convention, understand its job, and change only what earns the change.

There are no grades. Send questions, share attempts, and revisit the dispatches whenever a new brief begins to feel suspiciously familiar.
