My name is Lena March, and I began cataloguing the Field archive after finding four unmarked boxes in a loft above his old studio. The labels were spare: a town, a season, sometimes only the weather.
Inside were portraits beside receipts, landscapes beside test exposures, and letters that showed how closely he listened before taking out the camera. His best-known commissions sit beside hundreds of private observations that were never intended for print.
Morrow learned the darkroom trade from a cinema projectionist. During the postwar years he worked the rail line east, trading copies of photographs for meals and floor space. By 1958 he had settled near the harbor and opened a narrow studio over a chemist.
The work here follows that path without trying to make it neat. It keeps the mistakes, the grease-pencil marks, and the sequence in which one quiet image taught him to make the next.
