The Lantern

IX

Upright position

Patience, quiet resolve. The Lantern draws its light from the decision to keep walking after the road stops explaining itself. It is the right to move at your own timing rather than the timing you were handed. In its clearest form the impulse is unhurried and generative — it does not argue with the dark, it simply carries something into it. If a person keeps hold of that small steady flame, they finish work that logic had already filed away as finished, and they finish it without noise. The Lantern lends steadiness to anyone standing at the edge of a decision they cannot yet defend out loud, and it asks only that they keep the wick trimmed and the pace honest until the shape of the next stretch of path comes into view on its own terms.
