Snapshot of Starting on the Web

Getting to know Verso Updated 11 minu…

Verso is a writing surface that stays out of the way. It handles markdown, code blocks, images, tables, and attaching files or rich link cards.

Verso runs as a web workspace — you can open it here. Native builds for iPhone, iPad and desktop are ready too; you can grab the apps here.

What follows is a short tour of the pieces you will use most often in your first week.

The Quiet Return of the Field Notebook

Studios spent a decade moving every sketch onto a screen. The reversal, when it came, arrived quietly: bound notebooks reappeared on desks, and nobody called it a retreat.

The Consortium of Applied Design Schools, a small teaching body based in Ghent, has spent two years tracking how first-year students record their thinking. Its latest brief argues that the slower surface changes what gets written down — fewer fragments, longer arcs of reasoning, and a far higher rate of returning to an idea a week later.

Faculty at four member schools now require one analogue notebook per term. The results are early and messy, but the direction is consistent enough that studios outside teaching have started to notice.

Journal entry (July)

Field Journal Updated 26 minu…

1st July

Went back to the harbour path before the heat arrived. The tide was further out than the chart suggested, so the whole flat was walkable for an hour. Counted eleven oystercatchers and one bird I could not place — grey back, thin down-curved bill, gone before the binoculars were up. Left a note in the margin to check the plate for curlew sandpiper. The wind stayed north-east all morning, which kept the flies off and made the light unusually flat and even. Sketched the pilot hut twice, once badly.

2nd July

Rain from four onward, so the afternoon went to transcribing last week's pages. Three of them were illegible, which is a fair rate. Started a running list of the things I keep failing to describe: the exact green of the sea wall lichen, the sound the moorings make when the swell turns, the way the fog edge sits above the water rather than on it. None of these are solved by better pens. Ordered a smaller notebook anyway.
