The Silk Road: routes, goods, and the cities in between

The Silk Road was never one road. From roughly the second century BCE it was a shifting braid of caravan tracks, river crossings and sea legs that tied the Han capitals to the oasis towns of the Tarim basin, then onward to Samarkand, Baghdad and the Mediterranean ports. Silk travelled west; glass, horses, paper and, more consequentially, ideas travelled in both directions. What made the network durable was not any single power holding it open but the string of market cities that made a living from keeping it moving.
