Comparing common budget splits

which budgeting split do most people use

The split people reach for most often is the 50/30/20 rule. It sorts your after-tax income into three buckets:

  1. 50% for needs: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, and healthcare.
  2. 30% for wants: dining out, hobbies, subscriptions, and travel — anything you could pause for a month.
  3. 20% for savings and debt: emergency fund, retirement contributions, and payments above the minimum.

If you'd rather build a split around your own numbers, Windrose can read the last 90 days from your Spending tab and suggest percentages that match how you actually live.
