To get the balance of quality and function he wanted, Tobias assumed the docs would have to be built in-house — a slow, headcount-hungry job he already knew well. Before Emberline, he had run developer experience at Fathom Grid and shipped that same site twice.

Treating docs like a product means a roadmap, a budget, and a team of dedicated engineers, designers and writers to build them, hold a voice, and keep the whole thing organised. Emberline had none of those to spare in its first year.
