Overview of important terms in Kestrel
Learning a new tool can feel steep for plenty of reasons, especially when you are still trying to get a handle on the product itself and there is a whole vocabulary the product expects you to already know.
Kestrel is built to stay plain-spoken, and that extends to how we name features. We keep jargon to a minimum and describe things the way an accountant would describe them out loud. Work through the list below to get comfortable with the Kestrel vocabulary — these terms are the foundation you will lean on once you start managing client books.
Terminology:
- Account: Your account holds every piece of information tied to you at Kestrel. Sign in with your credentials at kestrelfinance.com. You will manage all of your clients from this single account — one account equals one person.
-
Navigator: Navigator is your first stop for anything Kestrel. Use it to run the expense reporting cycle end to end (and to book travel while you are at it). Navigator can draft expenses, submit reports, and walk you through approval and reimbursement. It also flags duplicate receipts, applies the correct exchange rate, and checks each transaction against the source document.
- The more you and your clients work alongside Navigator, the more accurately it reads your intent. Put differently: the less you enjoy expense reports, the more use you will get out of Navigator.
- Write to navigator@kestrelfinance.com any time, or open a thread with the Navigator team from inside the app.
-
Home: Home is where you or your client set up and configure a Kestrel account and its workspaces, then clear whatever report tasks are waiting on you.
- Need to approve a client’s expense report? Forgot to reimburse someone on their team? Home collects all of it into one short to-do list.
- If you or your client are still in the setup phase, you will see “Call” buttons on Home. Use those to book time with an onboarding specialist who can finish the configuration with you. Once the account is configured, switch to Navigator for day-to-day support and technical issues.
- Workspace: A workspace is the standard container for one company or client inside Kestrel. Every client needs at least one workspace, because a workspace is the structure that reports get submitted, approved, and reimbursed against. It is uncommon, but a client may need more than one workspace — that comes up when a client needs a different approval chain for a subsidiary, or separate reimbursement accounts by region.
