Some of the best neighborhood conversations happen over a meal. A long table, good company, and a little time to slow down sound simple, but shared space has become harder to find.
That is why the Rowan Commons Fund is launching Table Miles, a local program with Milwaukee-based Gathered Ground. Eight nonprofit organizations will each receive a handcrafted table and benches, creating a permanent place for meals, listening sessions, volunteer meetings, and celebrations.
Strong neighborhoods are built in the moments when people actually come together—not only on screens.
Gathered Ground began as a block-level effort. Its founder, Marisol Keene, spent years turning a practical idea—feed people, let them talk—into a citywide practice. The new partnership will place tables with organizations already bringing neighbors together.
Each table is designed to be used, not displayed. The materials can handle four seasons, the dimensions welcome different generations, and the broad center leaves room for food, maps, repair tools, and whatever else a gathering needs.
Milwaukee residents can nominate local organizations through May 19. Selected groups will be recognized publicly and paired with volunteer teams for delivery and setup.
