Where this began

Here is the version we tell each other.
Not the tidy one. The true one.

We are seven friends with an unreasonable weakness for paper — the smell of a fresh notebook, the drag of a good nib. We had each spent years in different corners of schooling and software. At some point it dawned on us that the people we most wanted to build with were already at the table.

And here is what we kept noticing. The apps got prettier. The dashboards got denser. And a nine-year-old would still reach past all of it for a pencil and a page. Not because the software was bad. Because there is something about writing — actually writing, hand moving on paper — that none of it had worked out how to stand in for.

That is when it landed. Nobody had made the thing kids already love any better. So we started with what was already on the desk. The notebook. Keep what is good about it. Fix the rest. Meet every learner on the page they are already on.

That is how we got to Foolscap Slate.
Because if nobody builds this, the answer keeps being one more screen, one more app, one more distraction wearing a school uniform. We would rather build for the pencil.

That is the whole job. And we are doing it with you in mind.
