Made in Kind is a design studio built on collaboration between makers, materials, places, and the wider community we work within.
Working side by side, we set out to reframe the familiar — pairing considered materials, close-grained detail, and an unusual adaptability across furniture and lighting for every kind of room.
Our founders, Mireya Salas and Teodor Brandt, are longtime friends whose route into business began with a shared aim: to make well-drawn objects that joined patient, made-to-order craft with manufacturing that could actually scale. With the launch of Made in Kind in 2016, they introduced a distinct, systems-led approach to design that still shapes much of the studio's catalog.
More than any style, genre, medium, or material, though, our signature is a commitment to creative partnership. Taking cues from our founders — who split the business according to their strengths but hold an equal hand in the drawing room — Made in Kind works under a better-together philosophy that invites peers into the design process. The result: a family of objects that are each singular, yet share a common intent, precision, and appetite for the unexpected.
Teodor and Mireya's regard for craft and material runs back as far as their Montessori childhoods and, later, to their training as makers working in wood, metal, upholstery, ceramic, and glass.
Today that perspective — combined with a relentless curiosity — guides how the studio makes. We try to meet each material on its own terms, letting its natural tendencies steer the form it finally takes. From there we begin refining, down to the smallest, plainest, most quietly surprising details: dimmers disguised as decorative flourishes, colors that turn over with the flick of a switch.
In particular cases we've partnered with like-minded peers such as ceramicist Inés Aldarondo and designer Rafferty Lowe to build entire collections that carry a
shared creative vision and push our chosen mediums further. Our Loam Collection sets Inés's organic, sculptural forms against the systems-driven plainness we are known for, while Thistle draws on classic Venetian glassblowing to honor the shapes of the field.
We're lucky to work with a widening circle of expert makers, artists, and engineers across three continents, each of whom plays an essential part in bringing our drawings to life. Every relationship we've built is a real partnership, with each person coaxing a piece toward its most exact and exquisite conclusion.
Our own backgrounds in making let us take an unusually hands-on approach to those partnerships, working beside collaborators to tune both design and production over time.
